Our Wolves are leaving!

About a month ago I wrote about the red wolf master plan meeting and the possible wolf transfers to be taking place. The plans are now just about official. Sunday we’ll catch up our boys and give them their physicals so they can be cleared for heading out to their new home. Monday we’ll drive them to Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Our brothers will be held in an off site holding area at the refuge and remain part of the captive component of the Red Wolf Recovery Program.

The photo to the right is from December 19, 2005. That’s the date when the wolves arrived at the Museum. Keeper Kent and myself, along with Tim Mengel, a supervisor at the NC Zoo, are releasing the wolves into our exhibit. These brothers are the only wolves who have lived in our current exhibit as it was new when Explore the Wild opened.

New wolves will be coming in, sometime the end of October. A male and a female and the hope is that they will breed here! I’ll fill you in soon with some details about our next wolves. In the meantime, we’ll be doing some planting in the exhibit and other upgrades to get it ready.

so, my comment is not about my wolf post, but about the poll that closed early. I kept looking for my name so I could vote for me over and over and over again.Seeing that the poll has closed, and that I am really not a keeper, please make the next poll “vote for you favorite animal department director”!

I was reading the older posts and see that we have wolves, 1389, 1390 and 1391. Which 2 are leaving and where is the 3rd one?

Hi anonymous. 1390 and 1391 are leaving. 1389 had to be euthanized. You can read a post about it if you go back to February 2007 posts.
