QuikPost: Sofia creates a chinchilla playground.

Our awesome volunteer Sofia ( actually this month she’s a paid youth animal keeper assistant!) made a new climbing structure of tunnels and tubes and stairs for our chinchillas this morning.  They’ve been active all afternoon exploring!

Where are the chinchillas? We were at the Museum of Life and Science today and could not find them.

    Hey Judith,
The chinchillas live behind the scenes. Our education staff takes them (and other npn-exhibit animals like the bearded dragons and ferrets) out to schools and Museum classrooms. A few ways to get to see them are to have a birthday party here at the Museum, or to sign up for a behind-the-scenes tour!

    Hello,
I saw the photos you posted on “Sophia creates a chinchilla playground” entry and was wondering if you could tell me where you purchased those clear colored tubes. I have a chinchilla and would really like to get some of those. The places I’ve gone to only have those foil looking tubes. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Megan,

Those tunnels can be found at most online pet stores or at places like Petco and Petmart; look in the ferret section.

Since the tunnels are only plastic, our chins have made a regular habit of chewing holes in them. We have to inspect the tunnels routinely for new holes that the chins or ferrets could potentially fall through.

They really seem to enjoy them, though!
