Sorry it’s taken so long to update you about the lemurs here. I’ve been busier than busy. It’s been a long road, and although the end can be seen, it is still way off in the distance. The end of the road: to add a group of five young ring-tailed lemurs to our group of two old ring-tailed lemurs.

In July 2014 five ring-tailed lemurs from the Toledo Zoo made their way. Young, bouncy, and active… I never had such a hard time counting to “5”. This past May, the boys went outside in the exhibit for the first time. It was great to see them active and jumping from tree to tree to tree.

Then, in August, it was time to introduce the old with the new. Aggression is part of the process, and while things could have gone worse, they also could have gone better. Maky, chose the introduction to our old two (by the way, Cassandra and Satyrus are totally fine and content) to stage a coup and oust his dad Oliver from the dominant position.

Result: injuries and healing to both Maky and Oliver. Oliver had numerous lacerations- none requiring sutures. Maky on the other hand, seemed to have a bicep tear and a huge toe laceration. Maky required numerous sutures and we were watching and waiting to see if he would lose his toe or any arm movement.

Well, Maky seems to not only have taken over, but also healed really well. A few photos to follow. (and… now that everyone has healed, it will be time to do reintroductions again. Let’s hope less injuries this time- but we’ll see. We’ll post updates).
