Here’s a couple of videos that were taken of Ursula over the last couple of years. in this first video, there was a particularly heavy snow that we got one winter and one of our previous keepers, Cassidy, got some video of Urse walking around and digging in the snow. Her thick coat made her seem oblivious to the cold weather and snow that was still falling at the time (you can see some of the snow on her back).Read more

Magicicadas

Another post from our invertebrate specialist, Rachael Knight.  It’s a must read for cicada lovers! When Ranger Greg wrote about the Magicicadas last May, I couldn’t wait to get out to the Eno and experience it for myself.  I was especially intrigued by Robin’s comment:  “…when you pick one up it growls at you!”  The idea of a growling insect was amusing to me, so I grabbed the camera and went out to see if I could capture the phenomenon. Read more

Recent interesting emails

I received two emails on Tuesday/Wednesday that I thought I would share with you. Surprise! Baby Degus!!

Apparently our male degu, Luis, was not neutered fast enough… because on Monday, May 23rd, animal department volunteer Ashlyn found Florencia’s 6 baby degus in a bag of shredded paper (used for animal enrichment) when she was cleaning out the cages! Degus are born with fur and are cute as can be. The amazing thing to me is that Florencia is not really that much bigger than the sum of these 6 babies!Read more
