Out and about

Well, spring is deifinitely right around the corner, and our black bears have become more active on the days when the weather is warmer. Today being around 80 degrees, it was perfect weather to be out and about! Here is a picture of three of them (Mimi, Ursula and Gus from left to right) that I took today at the 2:00 program where they were foraging for their afternoon food that I had scattered. BWOM: Accuracy or Precision?

This month’s Big Word of the Month post involves two words that are not very big but have very specific meanings in science. Take a look at our collections of hygrometers/thermometers from the reptile room. The electronic and analog meters are in very close agreement on temperature, all around 79°F. EnrichBits: Max’s Monday out– part two

EnrichBits: A monthly look at animal enrichment In the last EnrichBits post, I showed Max, our steer, getting some time outside his stall and yard on a day we were closed to vistors. He got to experience many new and enriching sights, sounds, and smells while he checked out Loblolly Park (our playground). The goal is to provide new and exciting without crossing the line into stressful, so we had quite a few animal department staff out there to helpRead more

Where’s Mudsy?

Mudsy is our mud turtle that is used for educational programs, and has lived off exhibit for many years. However, once Sponge Bob our softshell turtle passed away, we had an empty exhibit that needed to be filled. For right now, we have decided to put Mudsy in the tank. But some of our visitors have had a hard time finding Mudsy, because he looks a lot like the other rocks on the bottom of his exhibit. If you don’tRead more
