Trees for the bear yard

This past Monday was the day to relocate some large trees to plant in the bear yard.  Three large trees were removed from the parking lot and transplanted into the bear yard. We’re obviously hoping that all three trees will make it, but if we get two to take that will be wonderful! The trees are really big. Jim, our Director of Landscape Environments, is standing at the front of the truck to give some perspective. This truck is pretty cool. It’s got four huge towel/diggers at the end that pull up big root balls and dig super huge holes.

Joe is dealing with the first tree that was moved. This one is near the cave. All the trees will be surrounded by electric fence so the bears won’t be able to enjoy/destroy them. In a few years we hope to let the bears have access to the trees. In the short term, the trees will provide additional shade.

So much happens around here on closed Mondays- this tree project is just one of the main things we can get done when no guests are on grounds. I’ll post in a few days about last Monday’s work- doing repairs on the snake hall!
