QuikPost: Fun with enrichment

As I stated in another post, sometimes animal enrichment also serves as keeper enrichment. Last summer, the exhibits department donated the large stuffed horse from Play To Learn to the Animal Department when it was time to buy a new one. The horse sat on our support hall for a very long time, but finally one of the keepers decided to use it as enrichment for some of the farmyard animals. Obviously, this is an item that needed to have constant supervision while it was in with the animals, since there is a consumption factor to think about. But even though the horse only stayed in the yard with the goats for a short while, it looks like the item was a bit intriguing to them. I would love to be able to read their minds to know what they were thinking, but since I can’t I’ll just make something up…

"Ummmm, did Lightning have a baby? Or is that just the strangest looking goat ever?"
"OK buddy, I see you eyeing my food bowl. Don't even think for one minute that I'm sharing my food with you just because you're the new kid in the yard."
