Photos of Red Wolf 1287

She’s only been on grounds a few hours, but I got to see what our new wolf looks like this dusky morning. Still some fairly crappy photos for you as she seemed nervous and didn’t stand still. She is acting more like I would expect her to this morning (nervous, skittish, some peeing while she moved away from me). She did bed down in the hay, she did eat a bunch of her food (she’s on a special diet…). Subjectively,Read more

Red Wolf 1287 is here!

It’s been a long day, (although I guess it technically is tomorrow) with multiple issues, but our new red wolf female, 1287, is finally here. We learned in the Summer Red Wolf SSP Master Plan meeting that we would be getting a new female wolf to pair with our male.  She was originally due to fly in (on Delta) around 4:30 Tuesday afternoon. However, without going into details, she arrived to RDU airport around 11 PM Tuesday night. As usual, I don’t haveRead more

A wet and wild slip n’ slide

Red Wolf update- 1227 is feisty and strong

Below is the email I received from Chris yesterday: She sure is feisty.  She went about 48 hours without eating but now she is eating well and appears to be gaining weight.  We did a quarantine exam on her and she wasRead more

Crazy busy and Goodbye (to a wolf)

Things have been so busy here I don’t even know where to begin. Many staff have been off- (on vacation, at a wedding, at a Bar Mitzvah, presenting at the AAZK conference) and just as we were taking Cassandra off of the critical watch list (she’s been doing great), our female wolf, 1227, was found in bad shape two weeks ago and has been recovering from her injuries off exhibit. (She appears to have suffered some abuse from her mate-Read more

Tick Magnet

There are many joys to being an animal keeper, but as with any job it also has its downfalls. Pesky little bugs and bloodsuckers would be one of those downfalls. When working outside in the summer, we obviously deal with an onslaught of these critters. We become fantastic meals for  mosquitoes, ticks and chiggers while we are diligently doing our jobs and not paying attention to what might be joining us as we work. I am known to have aRead more
