Pile of gators

No, it’s not our new version of stackable kapla blocks–it’s just our American Alligators piled up under the basking light in their Carolina Wildlife exhibit.

Alligators bask in the sun, or move to cool spots, to help regulate their body temperature. Their hot spot in our exhibit is from a 160 watt heat and UVB light bulb made for reptiles, so you will often see them hanging out under it. I was amused to find them piggybacking like this!

The name alligator comes from the Spanish explorers who settled Florida. El lagarto, (the lizard) turned into alligator.
