Ice sculptures in the bear yard

It is hard to believe since it is almost 70 degrees today but just a few days ago there was quite an ice build up in the bear exhibit by the waterfall. While we were in the exhibit on Thursday to scoop poop and scatter enrichment I snapped a few pics. Sherry noticed that water splashing onto the grass had formed some “ice mushrooms”.

If you are ever at the bear exhibit and see ice build up you may also notice that waterfall is not operating. In really cold weather we have to shut off the water flow temporarily to prevent the weight of excess ice from damaging the waterfall face, which is artificial. Some of the younger bears seem to enjoy sliding around on the ice so I guess it is a form of natural enrichment.
