Our alpacas received their summer cut last Friday. Good timing, as it seems like our lovely spring temperatures are winding down and heat and humidity are arriving. I am always surprised how skinny the alpaca look without their fur. We end up with eight bags of fleece– two from each alpaca. The “seconds” from each one is used for animal enrichment. The “first cuts” are quality fleece that we typically sell. Anyone interested? I wonder if you can make aRead more

Quick update: Tuesday’s work
I had the privilege of being out and about across the entire campus more than usual today, so enjoy the pictures No picture from today’s Laser treatment for Virginia, but you can click here to see what and why we do it. While in Explore the Wild, I saw all seven lemurs outside sunning. Successful Enrichment
Our interns’ owl enrichment project seems to be a success. We (they) haven’t watched all the footage yet, but we got some video of the barred owl engaging with the nesting box that Dakota and Lauren worked on. Another one of our favorite enrichment items is an old car wash brush. We had hoped to order another one this year, however, we’re just going to have to make due with what we have. Yona seems to claim the brush asRead more
Another week down
Hope everyone was able to enjoy Easter, as well as Passover Seders. I am sure time with family over the computer was not what anyone had in store for these holidays. In my family, we made a special Covid-19 Passover Haggadah, which was abbreviated, fairly non-traditional, and began with a “Prayer for A Pandemic” As far as life at the Museum… we’re chugging along. The huge tasks this past week were to mow/weedeat the bear yard, and deal with supplies.Read more
