Pupdate #4

Dr. Vanderford checked the pups out Monday. The four pups are bigger– they’ve all gained about the same percentage of weight (33-37%), which means that our big one (#3) is much bigger than our small one (#5).  These males weighed in at 1,016 grams and 759 grams Monday morning. The females, #2 and #6, were at 875 grams and 932 grams. Some photos to follow which show some of the abrasion issues we pay close attention to, along with #2Read more

Pupdate #2

A few pictures of the pups from the past two days. This morning, the foot of #2, female, is still an issue, and we’re still very attentive to it. The other four pups were in pretty good shape. All five gained more weight… as expected. More vocalization and more movement today too. We spent a greater proportion of today’s check-in changing gloves and wiping off pup-poop from gloves, pants, paperwork, and pups. Our Exhibits Team got a den camera upRead more

Pupdate #1- the good and the sad.

News to report on the pups and not all of it happy: Four pups are doing great. They seem to be thriving. They’ve gained 43%-53% since initial weights were taken which is right on track. Some have started to vocalize when we pick them up. “Robust and active” were some of the words Dr. Vanderford used. Their feet look pretty good, they are peeing and pooping, and doing everything pups should do at this age.   Unfortunately, not all theRead more

THEY’RE HERE!!!!

Waiting is hard– but worth it, as Friday morning was an amazing day. Keepers Katie and Autumn heard squeaking in the morning and saw three pups in the front den. We let the female be to see if more were coming– and they did!! 6 total puppies 3 males and 3 females. Here’s the first picture we took: To check them out, we work quickly and pull everyone out of the den. Weigh them, give them a good look over,Read more

Still no pups…

… but we’re hopeful. The female wolf is looking very large and doing lots of digging in one of the den areas. It’s hard to wait – nerve-wracking actually. Many staff wrote their guesses for birth date and number of pups born in the Red Wolf Puppy Pool in the staff lunch area.Read more

Wolf Update

In 5-6 weeks I hope to be writing about WOLF PUPPIES. Ranger Greg has been blogging and tweeting about what he’s seen our wolves up to. We certainly hope it’s about puppy-making. We won’t know for sure until we actually see pups since the past two years our female has gone through pseudopregnancies. We have a new male this breeding season, so with 1414 we’re hoping for some renewed hope of actual pups. Every summer I go to the RedRead more
