Keeping the animals warm

Well, the cold weather is officially here! I took some pictures of a couple of the new things we have done this season to help keep our farmyard animals warm. To the right you can see pig stretched out under his warm heat lamp in the stall where he sleeps at night.

Also, you may recall a post about Nimbus‘s new winter box that we were building. We finished it weeks ago and it is complete with insulated walls and heat pads under the floor, and is on wheels for easy mobility (below is a picture of the box in the doorway to her yard). One chilly morning Larry measured the temperature inside the box and compared it to the air temperature outside the box. Amazingly, her box was 20 degrees warmer than the air outside! This sort of temperature difference in a small area is called a microclimate. Nimbus has already started sitting in her box on cold days and nights, so the project was a success.
